Floor cantilevers supporting an exterior balcony are permitted to be constructed in accordance with table r502 3 3 2.
Framing cantilever roof overhang.
Floor cantilevers constructed in accordance with table r502 3 3 1 shall be permitted where supporting a light frame bearing wall and roof only.
As far as this author can tell this area of light construction is not covered in the international residential code for wood framing but it is covered for cold formed steel framing where section r804 3 2 1 2 contains requirements for rake overhangs the two methods shown are the cantilever outlooker option 1 and the ladder outlooker option 2.
Most architects engineers like to use a 1 2 or better cantilever ratio favoring the inside in these situations.
Normally dutch hip overhangs are relatively short as compared to that part of the dutch hip framing set inside the building.
Figure 2 loads created by cantilever framing the non cantilevered end must either be counterweighted or firmly anchored to its support to counter the upward tendency that comes about when a load is placed on the overhang.
The part that overhangs the support should not be longer than 25 of the length of the adjacent fully supported part as shown in figure 2.
Shedding rainwater away from siding and trim especially from door and window sills can greatly reduce rot mildew and a host of other problems that can be caused by water streaming down the face of the building.
