Without a doubt my most popular post of the past 6 years is my diy building a fire pit post.

To align the bricks with the top of the fire pit add more paver base gravel or more fire bricks to the bottom of the pit.
Our kit can be installed on grass on top of a gravel paver base or on top of a patio.
A fire pit should sit low to the ground with walls rising no more than a foot off the ground.
Fire pits commonly consist of an inner wall an outer wall a cap i e a flat tabletop like surface around the opening at the top of the pit and decorative stones or rocks in the center.
The gravel also creates a level base for the stones to rest on.
Small fire pits are usually around 3 feet wide whereas large fire pits are up to 6 feet wide.
A beautiful fire pit area takes yearly maintenance.
I was living on a farm and we had an ample supply of the stuff so it seemed like a natural fit.
Fifteen to seventeen stones.
Build the fire pit gravel base adding gravel on top of the compacted dirt will create a base for your fire pit.
Lining the bottom of your fire pit with gravel.
It worked well enough although if you don t already have a good supply of it sand seems like the better choice.
Use paving stones or landscaping blocks that are angled on the sides.
Arrange the stones in a circle to make the fire ring on top of your gravel and sand base making sure that your first layer of blocks is secure and level.
Check the contents of your kit to see if additional materials are needed before assembling.
With a little thought and effort you can dress anything up even a random outdoor fire pit.
We re pleased with the way it turned out and have already enjoyed a few fires.
Add logs and kindling and you re ready for a pleasant evening by the fire.
Add a few inches of lava rocks to hold the bricks in place.
But for stability the base of the wall must be buried below ground in a hole lined with gravel providing drainage and protecting against frost heaves in winter.
One of the first fire pits i ever built had gravel in the bottom.
Fire pit dimensions are measured from the outside of the ring so keep in mind that the interior of the fire pit will be smaller than 3 6 feet depending on the thickness of your fire pit ring.
I didn t realize at the time how much it would resemble a sand box to them.
Wet the gravel thoroughly with a garden hose and then use the hand tamper to compact it into a hard.
Shovel four inches of gravel and four inches of sand then tamp each layer flat and level.
